Weighty matters

Way back in April I swore that I would lose 30 pounds by New Year's Eve.

I almost did it.

I managed to lose 25 pounds without much deprivation or angst. And without exercising.

(I know that I should exercise. I'd lose more weight and it would probably be better distributed than it is now.) As it is, my face is a little thinner and my boobs are a little smaller (thank goodness, since now I can wear some blouses that had been straining at the buttons), and my nonexsistent waist drops my pants waistband to my hips. Pants that I bought last spring, right before my swearing, are too big. The pants that I've been wearing all along are looser in the waist and hips, but not by much. So where did that 25 pounds go?

Not that I want to find it, mind you. I'd just like to know how I look almost as big as I did 8 months ago but I weigh less.

So I'm swearing again. By Jan. 1, 2010, I'll weigh 30 pounds less than I do now. Then I'll weigh just about what I should weigh ideally.

How did I lose weight? Instead of eating whenever I thought of it or out of habit (when I'm reading, when I'm watching tv) (when I'm breathing), I asked myself if I was really hungry, or was it just habit? Somehow that made it easier. I also limited buttered popcorn, my absolute favorite snack, to weekends only. On holidays and special occasions (like eating out) I didn't worry about what I ate; I enjoyed myself. I love m&ms, so I limit myself to a small handful each evening. Once they're gone, that's it for the night.

So. We'll see where I am in 11.5 months. I plan to weigh about 140 pounds. Let's see if I can do it.

Which just goes to prove...DIETS DON'T WORK!!! You go girl...you're doing it right. It's all about portion control. Well, proper nutrition helps along with exercise, but you already knew that.

I meant to tell you that you looked like you had lost weight. In our family Christmas picture, you look thinner. I ordered a copy from Snapfish.com and I really like that photo....I'm not sure if it was from your pictures or Joan's.

Hahahahaha! Only my face looks smaller. The rest hasn't changed much! I'll have to get a copy of whatever photo you have; I don't think that mine make me look thinner!

You're right, Deedee, exercise helps. I do a lot of weight-lifting here at work; those reams of paper are heavy. I lift as many as three at a time.

I had lost about 30 pounds and looked much better. Then I got diagnosed with breast cancer and instead of losing weight during chemo like normal people, I gained weight. I went on the all mint chocolate chip ice cream diet. Basically that was the only thing that didn't nauseate me and so I ate it whenever I was hungry (or rather not puking). Anyone who is thinking of trying that diet, forget about it - not good. I exercise a lot and I'm a vegetarian and eat mostly healthy stuff, but I'm sort of stuck back up there. Well, maybe it will go away again. Anyway, good luck losing your weight.

Wow, Elaine, you're a survivor! How long has it been? In that situation I too would eat whatever didn't make me sick and the weight be damned. You'll lose it again.

My daughter and her family are vegetarians. Cheese is a big part of their diet, and my daughter has to exercise like crazy AND diet to lose weight.
